PHIL HUTT
ICM Photography
BIO
Phil’s photography journey started in the late-1980s, as a way of helping to overcome the stress of a demanding career travelling the world to negotiate commercial aerospace contracts. At that time, he was using film and after adopting digital technology, he spent many years taking wildlife, floral and natural history subjects. It was fun and challenging but he recently decided that the time had come to create, rather than simply record, and he started to explore abstract imagery.
He found that experimenting with “Intentional Camera Movement” (ICM) photography, where blur is the objective rather than an unfortunate mistake, was liberating. No more obsession with pin-sharp images and far less time spent on post-production; no tripod - his only equipment now is a camera, zoom lens and a neutral density filter.
Phil made the abstract images in this collection by recording multiple exposures in a single photograph; by zoom bursts; and not least, by simply moving the camera while taking the shot. Some of them retain identifiable features, others bear little resemblance to the original subject. Each picture is unique and he places great value on being able to create something new and different out of almost anything he sees.
